Freedom of movement – what’s it going to be?
Let’s go back to the basics. Freedom of movement is one of the main principles of the EU. This allows EU citizens to move, live, work and study in the EU country to which they have moved.
However, after December of 2020, EU rules no longer apply to the United Kingdom. The government has introduced a new mandatory application for all EU citizens and their family members for permission to stay in Britain after the 31st of December 2020.
What is a settled status?
Settled Status means that you can legally stay in the UK indefinitely. If you are an EU citizen and want to live and work in Great Britain (with access to social security, healthcare, the right to study, etc.) you need to apply for Settled Status by the 30th of June 2021.
What is a pre-settled status?
This status applies to those who have lived and worked in the UK for less than 5 years. You will be able to stay in the UK for another 5 years from the day you get pre-settled status, and you can apply for settled status when you have lived in Great Britain for 5 years.
After receiving settled or pre-settled status, you will be able to:
- Work in the United Kingdom.
- Use the NHS services.
- Start studying or continue studying.
- Apply for social benefits and pension.
- Travel to and from the United Kingdom.
